Akwaaba...
Akwaaba. It means welcome in Akan, one of Ghana's languages. It is also how I greet everyone who lands here. This is where I keep my research, my teaching and the things I build.
I am Ray Opoku. By day I am a clinical data scientist in the University of Florida College of Medicine, building models that help clinicians keep patients safe. I also teach graduate courses in Educational Technology in the College of Education, where I earned my PhD in 2025 as a Holmes Scholar and the 2022 Gleim Research Fellow.
Trained as an economist and a data scientist, I care less about how accurate a model is on average than about who it gets wrong. That question runs through my work in fairness in AI, learning analytics and health AI, from the accuracy-fairness trade-offs in student performance prediction to whether clinical early-warning systems give every patient the same head start. I am a member of the AICE Lab (Advanced and Inclusive Computing for Education).
I grew up in Ghana and studied Economics and Statistics at the University of Cape Coast before heading to South Dakota State University for an MSc in Economics and an MSc in Data Science. Away from the screen you will find me traveling, behind a camera or deep in conversation with people who care about how we learn.
I build evidence that AI treats people fairly.
Learning analytics, health AI and the people behind the data.
Research
I build and audit machine learning models that make decisions about students and patients. The question behind my work is simple: who does the model serve well and who does it leave behind?
Fairness in AI
Measuring and reducing bias in predictive models, from accuracy-fairness trade-offs to group-level error analysis.
Learning Analytics
Mining learning management system and engagement data to understand how students learn and who is at risk.
Health AI
Clinical prediction models for patient safety, including length-of-stay forecasting and lead-time equity in early-warning systems.
